Culture of Corruption

2007.3.28 Alberto Gonzales AP.jpg

Did the attorney general of the United States lie? In the article below it appears that the Attorney General was more involved with firings of his assistant attorney generals that he first admitted. The Attorney General's actions have not caught the public eye in a significant fashion, but as the stories unfold the public needs to be concerned with the culture of corruption surrounding the Bush administration.

Flushing your money down the toilet-the following story about the Veterans Administration wasting millions of dollars due to inept management is another example how the government simply wastes your tax dollars. The VA apparently wasted $100 million in computer contracts, pushing through a contract resulting in inflated prices and duplicate payments.

War Defeat for Bush?

2007.3.29 Ried passes war bill.jpg

The United States Senate this evening handed President George W. Bush a defeat regarding his war policy. The Senate passed a nonbinding resolution requiring a timeline for troop withdrawal from Iraq. The resolution also calls for a nonbinding goal of ending combat operations by March 31, 2008. The President is threatening a veto, when the president should go ahead and sign the funding measure telling the American public that he is taking the recommendation of the Senate and the House of Representatives under advisement, but must act in the best interest of this country.

The Senate and House must do more-a nonbinding resolution is not enough. The American public wants decisive action, and the Senate and House must take decisive action because this President cannot be expected to take me an action that the American public is demanding. This weekend we will write more about Iraq, and our guest next week will discuss the war in Iraq on our live radio show here on the Internet on Thursday at 7 p.m.

We appreciate each of you reading these articles and being patient with us. It is our philosophy to break our one-week publication rules when significant stories such as this develop, these stories are necessary to keep you informed. Please feel free to comment about any story at this website.

Senate Signals Timeline for Troop Withdrawl

WASHINGTON AP- The Democratic-controlled Senate narrowly signaled support Tuesday for the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from Iraq by next March, triggering an instant veto threat from the White House in a deepening dispute between Congress and commander in chief. Republican attempts to scuttle the non-binding timeline failed, 50-48, largely along party lines.

Marine Reservists Involuntarily Recalled

Defense Secretary Robert Gates last week approved the action, under which reservists would report for duty in October and deploy to Iraq early next year, Riehl said.

From the 1,800 called, officials hope to get 1,200 Marines for aviation maintenance, logistics support, combat arms and several other skills needed for the early 2008 rotation into Iraq. Read more at Free Speech America.

Free Speech is Free Speech

2007.3.19.Decker Street Preacher Photo.jpg

Regardless of whether you are a conservative, liberal, or a street preacher preaching conservative Christianity you have a right of free speech. In this article, a street preacher went back to the streets after he was arrested by local officials in Athens Tennessee. The preacher was accused of hitting a police officer in the nose with his Bible, which the preacher, Mr. David Decker, denies. A police officer supposedly arrested Mr. Decker not for preaching in public, but for being in the way of traffic at a dangerous intersection. According to reports Mr. Decker was standing in the road placing himself and traffic at risk. When confronted he became belligerent pushing his Bible or poking his Bible in the nose of the officer. He was arrested.

In the article below, Mr. David Decker returned to the intersection with signs and Bibles. He began preaching again. Mr. Decker has the right to preach in public so long as he does not pose a threat to others or threat to himself. If the police reports are true and Mr. Decker was standing in traffic at the time of his arrest, he does not have the right of free speech because standing in traffic not only places him at risk but places others at risk of injury. However, if Mr. Decker never placed himself at risk or posed a risk to others by standing in traffic he has the perfect right to say what is on his mind regarding his religious beliefs as a street preacher. Freedom of speech belongs to everyone, not just a select few. However, as this story reminds us there are reasonable limits on how we can express our free speech particularly if you are "stupid enough" to stand in traffic while speaking out.

The courts will decide whether Mr. Decker was in traffic or whether he used his Bible to hit a police officer in the nose. However, if Mr. Decker did neither and he was arrested because he was exercising his free speech he should be acquitted. If Mr. Decker did hit the police officer in the nose with his Bible, and was standing in traffic placing people at risk than the Court should limit his right of free speech and appropriately punish him. Here is the article on Mr. Decker from the Chattanooga Times Free Press.

Blake Baxter & One Soldier’s View: Who Will Lead?

2009.3.19 photo blake baxter.jpg
Blake Baxter in Iraq

Last Sunday I said goodbye to four close friends at the conclusion of our Sunday National Guard drill. All four had served in combat in Iraq. With our goodbyes, our unit lost their experience and skills. Unfortunately, they are neither the first to leave since we came home from Iraq nor will they be the last.

The daily loss of experienced personnel and the lack of equipment are increasingly pushing the Guard closer to the breaking point.

In this case, this is not one soldier’s view, but the considered opinion of the bipartisan Committee on the National Guard and Reserves (CNGR). The CNGR published its second report on March 1, 2007 and the CNGR report should be read by anyone concerned about the current state of our military.

Climate Crisis Action Day/Miranda Dunne Parry

2007.3.19 Parry and Gore.jpg
Miranda Parry with Vice President Al Gore

It would have been unheard of just months ago, but on March 21, both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate will be holding hearings into global climate change. And, with the Democrats in control of both the House and the Senate, we can finally expect to hear more from our politicians on this subject.

They are going to hear a lot more from us too. March 20(the day before the hearings) has been set aside as Climate Crisis Action Day, and the more of us get involved, the more we will be heard in our demands that our leaders start taking action to solve the climate crisis.

U.S. Troops Face Social Ills in Iraq

Blake Baxter forwarded us this article from the Associated Press | March 14, 2007

BAGHDAD - Heavily armed Soldiers trudge through the fetid streets of Sadr City, gagging from the stench of open sewage, eyes warily scanning ahead for trouble. Suddenly, a middle-aged man approaches - and begs for a job.

"We are a peaceful people," the man tells the interpreter. "We only want to work and feed our families. Now is the time for people to come and offer us jobs."

GRAY SASSER: PROBLEM-SOLVING GONE AWRY

Sasser Photo.jpg

The recent media flagellation of Vice President Al Gore over his utility bills added nothing to the search for solutions to global climate change. After President Bush’s belated but welcomed admission that the time has come to solve this crisis, the era of political posturing on this issue has ended. Hopefully, the days of a political attack masquerading as problem-solving will soon pass into history as well.

When faced with the real issues from the environment to education, some of us in the political world need to be willing to beat our partisan swords into plowshares as we work toward solutions. This does not mean that we should stand idly by when someone launches ad hominem attacks. Instead, we need to stand up for our friends and our cause and rescue the discussion from the talking heads.

JOHN BAILES: Putting People First Means Health Care for All

john_mug.jpg

This week Army Surgeon General Kevin C. Kiley stepped down in a health care scandal that has reminded us that the Bush Administration has ignored one of our core American values. At our core, we Americans believe in putting people first—and that means taking good care of our veterans.

Yet the poor treatment of wounded soldiers at the U.S. Army’s flagship hospital, Walter Reed Medical Center, tells us that Bush Republicans are out of touch with our core values, especially our most important—putting people first.

No Wonder Toyota Turned Tennessee Down

4runner_main.jpg
The Toyota 4 Runner-You can't drive this unless you speak English in Tennessee

Why did Toyota pass on building an automobile plant in Tennessee?

On Saturday, March 10, 2007 the Chattanooga Times Free Press reported:

"After weeks of battling Senate Republicans over such issues as an English only driver’s license exam bill, Governor Bredesen this week made a peace offering of sorts as he dined with GOP majority senators. "As an accommodation, we put the menus in English for them and made a joke about it," said Governor Bredesen, who has criticized the GOP driver’s license exam bill."

The Republican majority in the Tennessee State Senate spent weeks debating whether Tennessee should offer English only driver licenses exams. After weeks of debate, the bill passed. But there is a catch.

The Lost Tomb of Hoffa

On Wednesday, November 7, 2007 Free Speech America engaged in a discussion regarding the documentary "The Lost Tomb of Jesus." Our guest, forensic anthropologist Dr. Hugh Berryman, believes the science espoused in the program did not support the documentary's conclusion that we found the final resting place of Jesus.

In closing comments Dr. Berryman concluded that 10 ossuaries (boxes where bones are stored) of which six were marked with names, and four unmarked, did not contain the bones of Jesus or any of his alleged family members. Dr. Berryman suggested that the producers of the documentary reopen the tomb to examine one of the unmarked ossuaries because the examination may find the bones of Jimmy Hoffa.

Libby Jurors Defend Guilty Verdict
By MATT APUZZO and MICHAEL J. SNIFFEN, Associated Press Writers

Denis Collins. a juror in the perjury trial of ...
WASHINGTON - Jurors in the Libby trial turned their deliberation room into one big visual aid, plastering the walls with dozens of poster-size summaries of witness testimony.

They pushed two long tables together, pored over testimony, reviewed their notes and spent a week just laying out the evidence.

But in the end, it came down to credibility and they simply did not believe the former White House aide's story.

Harold Ford Jr: Plan B For Iraq

Time for ‘Plan B’ in Iraq
Harold Ford, Jr.

It’s abundantly clear by now that a solid majority of the American people, along with majorities of both Houses of Congress, oppose President Bush’s past and present policies in Iraq, and especially his plan for achieving an ill-defined and illusory “victory” in Iraq via a “surge” of U.S. combat troops.

But we who oppose the president’s plan have a responsibility to define a “Plan B.”

Bernie Miller: The Lost Tomb of Jesus

2007.2.27 the Talpiot tomb.jpg

The Lost Tomb of Jesus?
By Dr. Bernie Miller, Pastor
New Covenant Fellowship Church

"The Lost Tomb of Jesus," is a documentary that suggests a 2,000-year-old Jerusalem tomb could have once held the remains of Jesus of Nazareth and his family. The operative phrase is "could have," but in actuality it could not have. There's an old song by Brian McKnight entitled, "Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda." It's a statement made in hindsight or wishful thinking. "I could have," McKnight sings, "I would have. I should have. But I didn't."

Former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell advised President George W. Bush before the Iraq war to send more troops to the country, but the administration did not follow his recommendation. "The president's military advisers felt that the size of the force was adequate.some of us don't, I don't," Powell said. "In my perspective, I would have preferred more
troops." In hindsight Powell was right.

Hoax or History: James Cameron's Lost Tomb of Jesus

From the Chattanoogan.com in Chattanooga Tennessee

Driving Another Wedge Between Christians And Non-Christians - And Reply
from www.chattanoogan.com

James Cameron has found Jesus. But not quite the way you think. The director of "Titanic" has supposedly unearthed the burial site as well as coffin and bones of none other than Jesus himself! Who would have thought after all this time, we could have just gone over there and walked right into the greatest discovery of mankind. All of this fighting and quarling, wars raged, the crusades even, could have been avoided if only we looked in the right place.

This will have repercussions throughout the world. Paul said "if Christ be not risen your faith is in vain and you are still in your sins" I wonder how exactly they expect to prove that this is Jesus' bones?? They won't have to. They'll simply say that it's so, and dare you to prove them otherwise. The burden of proof quickly swings to those crazy Christians.

If this story has legs, and picks up to be accepted as fact, that there was a man named Jesus that lived but his bones are here on display, evangelicals could have their work cut out for them. How could we say that Jesus has risen when his bones are at some Museum?

This is an attack designed to undermine the faith to it's core. What good could come out of this? Does Mr. Cameron expect the world of Christians to suddenly slap themselves on the head in amazement? Should we throw down our bibles and suddenly declare in one voice, "hey, sorry about that whole faith thing, my bad"? He has sorely underestimated his opponent if that is the case.

This will play out in the media. Those who already hate the faith will have more ammunition against it. Those in the faith will not be swayed. This only serves to drive a wedge further between us.

Jason Conley
Marshall Avenue
Chattanooga

* * *

I suppose Mr. Cameron is now some sort of archeologist and theologian. He sure is wasting his time in Hollywood. I expect this to lead into some kind of movie deal.

The bottom line is faith. Everyone of us exercises faith. Faith in God; faith in no God. Faith in Christ; faith in myself. Faith in heaven and hell; faith in no heaven or hell.

Since Jesus' time, there have been those seeking proof. Jesus said He was God. That either makes Him a liar, lunatic, or Lord. He certainly cannot be called a good teacher or prophet, unless He is Lord.

Jesus spent no time debating the issue of His equality with God the Father. He just went about healing the sick, raising the dead, and changing lives. And the changed lives of those who have placed their faith in Christ over the past 2,000 years is all the proof anyone would need.

Mr. Cameron's so-called discovery will not dissuade true believers from our faith.

J. Ross Greer
Ringgold

James Cameron's Fantasy
From www.chattanoogan.com

Apparently James Cameron knows much more about finding sunken ships than he does about finding Jesus. Cameron's recent "documentary" regarding the discovery of the tomb and bones of Jesus Christ is nothing but fantasy on the order of Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code.

What kind of Savior would Jesus be if he were still dead? C.S. Lewis stated that if Jesus Christ were not whom he claimed to be, he was a liar, a lunatic, or the devil of hell.

According to the Bible, Jesus was our Savior from sin. Over 500 people at one time saw him after he rose from the dead to prove that fact.

Mr. Cameron needs to either confine his searches to sunken treasure or to be more objective in his search for the real Jesus.
