What Makes American Idol Tick

What makes American Idol tick? No one may figure it out. After all, this is the show that airs a two hour borecast raising over 60 million dollars. This is the show that tied donations to votes for the future American Idol receiving more than 50 million votes before its "Idol Gives Back" program. This is the program that takes a charitable cause and turns it into a ratings bonanza.
What makes American Idol tick? Why are there more votes for potential idols than votes cast for President? How many of you readers tell people in public that you do not watch the show, and then you go home to watch and vote for the next Idol? Why do we watch?

Harold Ford Jr: America Needs Optimisim

After six years of stagnant incomes, increasing inequality, rising debt and declining confidence, many Americans are rightly anxious about their economic futures.
But the last thing they need is an old populism that plays to their fear, anger and pessimism, and, in the end, will only make matters worse. Yet, there are unmistakable signs of a growing "populist" revolt against globalization, especially immigration and trade.
Right-wing populists claim immigrants are stealing Americans' jobs. Left-wing populists say trade is shipping our jobs overseas. Both look backwards toward an allegedly better past and argue that, by sealing our borders and retreating from global markets, government can recover it.
Our country's problem isn't immigration or trade, It's uneven prosperity. Searching for scapegoats and stoking feelings of victimization is the wrong answer.

Ann Coulter is a Right Wing Nut Job
Ann Coulter is a right wing nut job, plain and simple. The following is from the Associated Press:
"WASHINGTON - A recent Newsweek poll showing Democrat Barack Obama leading top Republican presidential hopefuls could have been made up and might help al-Qaida, conservative commentator Ann Coulter said in her latest verbal broadside."
Where does she get this stuff? What is her source, little green men from Mars?
Here is more from the report:
"Coulter, a best-selling author known for outrageous and often controversial statements, was asked Sunday on Fox News' "At Large" what she thought about the survey results.
"I think this is Newsweek doing more push polling for al-Qaida," she said, referring to campaign-season telephone calls to voters masquerading as neutral surveys but designed to build opposition to targeted candidates.
Asked by host Geraldo Rivera whether she thought Newsweek would make up the results, Coulter said, "Yes, I do," adding, "In polls where people are actually allowed to vote, Republicans do a lot better."
Coulter did not explain how the poll might help the terrorist group."

One Soldier's View by Blake Baxter on Free Speech America
The news from Balad Ruz was bad again this week. The al-Huriya police station in eastern Balad Ruz was struck by a suicide bomber and some more of my Iraqi police friends were killed. Thinking about this particular police station made me think about the national debate we are now having about our policy in Iraq. The debate reminds me that the al-Huriya station came into existence because of an "arbitrary" deadline that we imposed on the Iraqis.
