Soviet Style Opression
Late last week, the federal government settled a lawsuit with a pair of Texans who were arrested in 2004 for wearing anti-Bush T-shirts at a Fourth of July event in Charleston, W.Va. That's right, friends, $80,000 (of your taxpayer dollars) will be paid out to Jeff and Nicole Rank, whose suit against Gregory J. Jenkins—former deputy assistant to the president and director of the White House Office of Presidential Advance—has been dismissed.

Wearing us Out

The final votes won't be counted for another 15 months, but the 2008 presidential campaign already seems to be wearing out its welcome with many Americans. When asked to sum up their impression of the early-blooming campaign in a word, a majority of the public has a negative assessment, while just one-in-five has a kind -- or even mildly favorable -- thing to say.

The Power of Potter

Read it to me...Seven years ago it started with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. My daughter was seven. Hadley received the book from her grandmother, and I started reading to her in my corny English accent, and making up voices for the characters---Dumbledore, Ron, Hagrid, Hermione, Harry and ultimately Voldermort.
My daughter became enchanted with Harry Potter--she loved those corny voices, and the tradition began--every night my daughter came to me saying "read it to me." We finished the first book, and each time a new Harry Potter book came out, she came to me saying "read it to me."

Capturing the Center
From Harold Ford Jr and Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley
With President Bush and the Republican Party on the rocks, many Democrats think the 2008 election will be, to borrow a favorite GOP phrase, a cakewalk. Some liberals are so confident about Democratic prospects that they contend the centrism that vaulted Democrats to victory in the 1990s no longer matters.

American Leadership on the Decline

From the Pew Research Center--All three branches of the federal government are under fire from the American public. Just 29% approve of President Bush's job performance while the proportion with a favorable view of Congress has declined 12 percentage points since January. Even favorable opinions of the U.S. Supreme Court have fallen, from 72% in January to 57% currently.

A Phony War

Cox News Service reported this week “Gingrich says Bush fighting “phony war” on terrorism.”
Mr. Gingrich declares the “Bush administration is waging a phony war on terrorism…” Gingrich also believes the country is “losing ground against the kind of Islamic radicals who attacked the country on September 11, 2001.”

To Err is Human

After 50 years of public service Ward Crutchfield's resignation becomes effective on August 6, 2007.
Recently, I went through an e-mail exchange with the reader who criticized my condemnation of George W. Bush for commuting the sentence of Scooter Libby-he made the point that there are so many corrupt politicians-- corruption crosses party lines. He asked why I did not make an example of Democrats committing corrupt acts, or giving favoritism to their political cronies.
Since that exchange, I have been thinking about what this reader said, and maybe there is a greater point to be made-we are only human and as humans we are born to make mistakes--when we make mistakes we should admit them, asking for forgiveness and understanding. If we are genuine, then I believe people will forgive.
